The Stories World Cup: Round One Ledger

Welcome back to the hearth, Travelers.

When we first opened the ledgers for the inaugural Stories World Cup, we did so quietly. This opening bracket was a small skirmish—a mere test of the waters to see if the patrons of the Black Dragon Tavern held an appetite for pitting the old world's myths against one another.

You answered with a roar!

For 24 hours after each short dispatch was released, the votes poured in. The taverns were full, the debates were heated, and the outcomes were absolute. Here is how the dust settled in the first round of our mythological clashes

  • The Landslides: The Irish Changeling mythos utterly dominated the concept of spirited-away disappearances, while Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror of Mesoamerica, managed to completely outmaneuver the great trickster Anansi by a massive margin.
  • The Upsets: In a heavy blow to the Welsh banners, their iconic Red Dragon was dragged beneath the waves by the Finnish disease-monster, Iku-Turso.
  • The Bloodiest Battle: The maritime war between the Kraken and the Kelpie was by far the tightest race, but the malicious Scottish water horse ultimately drowned the Norse leviathan.

Because you have shown such a fierce dedication to these matchups, the scribes are already taking notes. If the fires remain this hot, we will prepare a vastly expanded, globe-spanning tournament to coincide with the Winter Olympics.

But for now, our current board is far from clear.

The Semifinals are rapidly approaching, and the rules of engagement are shifting. We are leaving the beasts, the tricksters, and the elemental horrors behind. Round Two will be themed entirely around the Heroes of these remaining cultures.

Who will represent Ireland, Scotland, Finland, and Mesoamerica? We are keeping those names shrouded in the mist until the very moment the dispatches go live.
