There is an old superstition that speaking the devil's name will summon him. You probably think that's just a myth. But thousands of years ago, our ancestors believed it so completely that they entirely erased the name of a real, breathing apex predator from the English language. The word "Bear" doesn't actually mean bear. In linguistic terms, it's called "taboo avoidance." The tribes of Northern Europe lived in deep, dark forests, and they were so terrified of this massive, silent predator that they refused to say its true name, fearing it would hear them and come out of the woods. So they used a whispered nickname: Bera, which literally translates to "The Brown One." They used this nickname for so many centuries that the original Germanic name for the animal was completely forgotten. It is entirely lost to history. We don't speak it because an entire civilization of hardened warriors was too terrified to say it out loud. Some monsters still come when you call. There was a massive superstition that the very first morning dew on May Day—the Drúcht na Bealtaine—was purely magical. Because it was a threshold holiday, the dew was seen as "border water," holding the concentrated, waking power of the earth. If you washed your face with it before the sun came up, you were guaranteed a flawless complexion, no sunburns, and eternal beauty for the rest of the year. Which means, historically, if you walked outside before dawn, you would see half the village—from young women to grizzled, scarred farmers—enthusiastically rolling their faces in the wet weeds before the neighbors saw them. We hear that line and think Robin Hood was hunting down merchants, tradesmen, and blacksmiths—people who actually built businesses and created wealth. He wasn't. He was hunting the state. If you read the earliest medieval ballads, Robin Hood’s enemies were corrupt abbots and the Sheriff of Nottingham. I have spent the last week debunking the ancient history of Eostre and the pagan origins of Easter. But I want to make something very clear: the modern, Neo-Pagan story of Ostara—the goddess waking the earth and bringing the spring—is an incredibly beautiful story. As a storyteller, I love it. Celebrating the end of winter, honoring the turning of the earth, gathering with your community to welcome the light... there is immense value in that. But a story built on a false historical foundation is just a beautiful ghost. You do not need to claim your myth is a three-thousand-year-old, unbroken historical fact for it to be meaningful today.
