There is a piece of wisdom written 3,000 years ago in the Book of Proverbs (18:17): "The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him." Manipulators will beg you not to listen to anyone else. They will say your friends are blind and the experts are lying. If you’ve watched a Viking show, you’ve seen the Blood Eagle (Blóðörn). It is the most terrifying execution method in history. But did it actually happen? For decades, historians said no. They argued it was a mistranslation of Skaldic poetry, exaggerated by the bias of Christian monks. And to be fair to the monks, when your monasteries are constantly being raided and burned by Norsemen, a negative bias is pretty justified. But a 2021 study from Keele University changed the debate. Anatomists ran the simulations and found that with Viking-era tools, you could actually unzip a ribcage like that. Had some tourists in the tavern get upset because I told a story about Genghis Khan. They wanted me to look at the messy, bloody history of the world and slap a sticky note on it to protect their feelings. But if I can't appreciate a conqueror's sheer strength and logistics without condoning his atrocities, I lose 80% of history's lessons. We look back with the god's-eye benefit of hindsight and think we are inherently better people. We aren't. We were just born on moral third base. My job is to hand you the raw materials of history.
