If you push polite society too far, you might find yourself "sent to Coventry." It means absolute, crushing ostracization. But where did this phrase actually come from? A famous legend dates back to the English Civil War in the 1640s. Coventry was a strongly Parliamentarian city, and Royalist prisoners were frequently sent there for confinement. Later tradition claimed the fiercely Parliamentarian locals shunned them so completely that no one wanted to speak, trade, or associate with them. Another old explanation says Coventry was simply notorious among soldiers because the townspeople despised the local garrison and wanted nothing to do with them. Whichever story birthed the phrase, the idea survived because the punishment is instantly understandable: you're surrounded by people, and none of them will acknowledge you. By the 15th century, the English were fortifying the frontier of their shrinking territory around Dublin known as the Pale, defending it with banks, ditches, and fortifications. Inside it, English law held sway. Beyond it lay Gaelic territory that English officials increasingly portrayed as dangerous, lawless, and uncivilized. This Irish border is often said to have given us the modern idiom. Language historians dispute that direct connection—but the underlying image is the same. This creature is the ugly, lingering scar of poverty, shame, and desperation. In the old North, some infants were secretly abandoned or killed before they could be baptized or properly buried. The Myling is the spirit that crawls back. If you encounter one, it leaps onto your back, demanding to be carried to holy ground so it can finally rest. But as you walk, the ghost grows heavier and heavier—as though it carries all the guilt of what happened to it. If you cannot reach the graveyard in time, the sheer weight of the ghost will literally crush you into the dirt. Sometimes, the best survival tactic is a heavy iron deadbolt. Representing Scotland is the legendary warrior queen, Scáthach. Operating out of the Isle of Skye, she isn't just a fighter; she is the apex martial arts instructor of Celtic myth. Her fortress is guarded by the Bridge of Leaps, which violently throws unworthy challengers to their deaths. She famously trained Ireland’s berserker Cú Chulainn and gave him the Gáe Bolga—a terrifying spear carved from a sea monster that splinters into thirty barbs once inside the victim's body. Representing Mesoamerica are the Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque. These two didn't just fight monsters; they played the ultimate long-con on the underworld. They marched into Xibalba, survived the terrifying Houses of Death, and willingly let themselves be ground into dust so they could resurrect. They then put on a magic show, killing and resurrecting each other until the Lords of Death begged to try it. The Twins obliged, killed the death gods, and simply left them dead. When the god Lugh arrived at the royal court at Tara, he gained entry by proving he was the Samildánach—the man of each and every art. But the most important part of his lore isn't his resume. The great harvest festival of Lughnasadh bears his name, but its grieving heart belongs to his foster mother, Tailtiu. She cut down a great forest, roots and all, until the land became an open plain so it could be cultivated and sustain her people. The poem says the strain burst her heart. Lughnasadh is not merely a celebration of a god's greatness. One of its defining traditions is a funeral assembly held for the woman who raised him. Lugh answered her final request with funeral games and a gathering at the opening of the harvest season. True mastery isn't about showing off; it's about what your skills can provide for others.
